‘Inability to protect Pulmude sand mine incurring loss to govt.’

Lanka Mineral Sands Limited Chairman Indika Ranathunga said being unable to protect the mineral sand mine at Pulmude has incurred a loss to the government.

The public in the area created an uproar when government officers tried to make a fence around the heap of the sand in Pulmude, while leveling threats and assaulting them.

High ranking officials of Lanka Mineral Sands, including the Chairman and General Manager, who went there with the staff and Police Special Task Force, were prevented from making a fence on Sunday and Monday.

Pulmude Police and the Pulmude Divisional Secretary instructed them not to construct the fence as it breaches peace. Lanka Mineral Sands Chairman Ranathunga said Pulmude Police are acting partially.

The employees of Lanka Mineral Sands said sand is stolen daily and robbers are protected by the politicians including a few ministers. They said each tipper-load is sold at Rs. 45,000 and a number of tipper loads is stolen daily.

The people said this is the money that should go to the Treasury.
