Banned nets in Batticaloa waters

The Fisheries authorities and Sri Lanka Navy have seized 50,000 feet of prohibited fishing nets from the Batticaloa inland waters. Divisional Assistant Director of Fisheries Department, Rukshan Kurusa said the department with the support of Navy cracked down on banned type of fishing nets along Battcaloa Lagoon in Kallady, Nawalady Katthankudy, Manachanthoduwai, Vavunathivu, Karayankanthivu and Muhatthuwaram, and seized the illegal nets.

The raids were conducted on Friday and Saturday following complaints of illegal fishing in the lake, the fisheries authorities said.

Among the seized illegal fishing gear were mono-filament nets (Tangus nets) and trammel nets (disco nets ).

The authorities could not take anyone using the banned fishing gear because they have left them unattended, they said.
