SLTB to get new fleet of luxury buses by 2020

Only high-quality luxury buses will be imported for the Sri Lanka Transport Board from now onwards, Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Arjuna Ranatunga said yesterday.

New specifications for the purchase of these high-quality luxury buses will be introduced in the next few months. New laws will also be brought to Parliament to prohibit the import of buses for the SLTB outside these specifications, he said.

These specifications can also be introduced to the private bus industry as well. The SLTB is responsible for 40 percent of passenger transport services in Sri Lanka. The existing fleet is old and we have to add at least 500 new buses to the fleet. Therefore, between 500 and 1,000 new high-quality luxury buses will be imported before August 2020, the Minister said.

The fleets of both semi-luxury and super luxury buses are old. Therefore the new specifications will be introduced for both semi-luxury and super luxury buses as well, he said.
