Symposium on wildlife trafficking today

The Wildlife Conservation Department along with the Colombo University, the CITES CoP18 Sri Lankan Secretariat, and Environmental Foundation Ltd. has organised a one-day scientific symposium on wildlife trafficking at the Colombo University today.

The chief guest will be Tourism Development, Wildlife and Christian Religious Affairs Minister John Amaratunga. Foreign Secretary Ravinatha Aryasinha will be the keynote speaker.

The symposium will highlight a relatively unknown, but a major and increasing threat to wild plants, animals and ecosystems of Sri Lanka. Authors of research papers include officers of the Sri Lanka Customs, the Wildlife Conservation Department, the National Herbarium, Fundamental Studies Institute, university-based and independent researchers, and environmental activists from non-governmental agencies. Sri Lanka will be the host country in the 18th conference to combat illegal wildlife trade. Having submitted six proposals to the CITES this time, Sri Lanka stands firm to her commitments to protect her biodiversity.
