The celebration of the 71st Sri Lankan Independence of Sri Lanka was held at the Box Hill Town hall under the auspices of the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Melbourne. Commenced with traditional formalities and a panoply of pomp and pageantry driven by the spirit of patriotic flavour and gravitas, the event was graced by over 600 dignitaries.

The Consul General Prasanna Gamage in association with Deputy Consul Nilusha Dilmini felicitated Kumar Ediriweera and his wife Sirimavo by presenting a special Award on behalf of the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Melbourne.

The Award in the form of an exquisitely carved memento adorned with the National Emblem of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, bears the citation: “Presented by the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Melbourne in recognition of their invaluable contributions spanning over five decades, as their work has been wholeheartedly dedicated to the advancement of Sri Lankan Arts and Culture, both in Sri Lanka and in Australia”.

It was also in recognition of their generous contributions in organising and presenting the anniversary celebrations of the Independence of Sri Lanka, in particular, the cultural program consecutively for the last ten years, in association with the Sri Lankan Consulate in Melbourne.
