“Parents also play a vital role in moulding children and they cannot expect miracles from the teachers without contributing to the formation of their children,” Rt. Rev. Dr. J.D. Anthony Jayakody, Auxiliary Bishop of Colombo said.

He was speaking at the 117th annual prize-giving of St Joseph’s College (SGC), Colombo 10, which was held at the school’s Rev. Fr. Stanley Abeysekera sports complex cum auditorium recently.

The Auxiliary Bishop praised St Joseph’s College for producing men of faith, knowledge and virtue.

Holistic education is of fundamental importance in the modern world and that is also the primary aim of Catholic education, he said.

SJC Rector Rev. Fr. Travis Gabriel said today we live in an age of technology and that technology has facilitated vast development for humanity, but has also become a potential form of distraction for most teens. There is evidence that the excessive use of smartphones has led many teenagers to depression and it is the duty of parents and teachers to convince children of the importance of using the phone in a responsible manner.

Catholic Private Schools (Western Province) General Manager Rev. Fr. Ivan Perera, Rev. Fr. Victor Silva, a past Rector of SJC, members of the Catholic clergy and religious, past and present teachers, past and present pupils and parents were also present on the occasion.
