Making opera accessible

The Galle Face Hotel will be hosting ‘A Night at the Opera’ in association with Barbara Segal Music with international guest stars Carlos Conde Gonzales, Maestro Peter Crockford and artists from the Menaka Singers Opera Ensemble. The event takes place on March 13 at 7 pm at the Grand Ballroom, refreshments including PIMMS and canapes will be served from 6.30 pm.

The show will feature Emesh Wijewardena, a Josephian whose talent led to him being offered a scholarship to sing the lead role in the opera L’elisir d’amore in Sicilly during the Mediterranean Opera Festival where he met Professor Carlos, who was impressed by his talent and training .

Professor and Baritone, Carlos Conde Gonzalez has had a huge international career and sung lead roles all over the world. He also does accreditation for universities, in fact, the Metropolitan Opera Auditions were recently held at the university where he gives master classes.

Maestro Peter Crockford has conducted opera and orchestral performances across the world and has visited Sri Lanka five times to conduct master classes at the Faculty of Performance and Visual Arts.

Ms. Barbara Segal, herself an international performer and regular guest lecturer at various music conservatoires, is based in Sri Lanka offering intensive tutorials for students who have great potential for the future of opera in Sri Lanka.

The Grand Ballroom will be filled with musical splendor for this special evening and unique opportunity to create exposure for the arts in Sri Lanka and to promote local talent.
