Tirappane Pradeshiya Sabha JVP member Rohana Wijetilleke was beaten with an iron rod by a group of men, near his house, at around 10.00 pm on Saturday.
Wijetilleke is now receiving treatment for his injuries at the Anuradhapura Hospital.
Reports said four men had arrived near Wijetilleke’s house in a white cab and stopped the cab and pretended to attend to a mechanical fault, as a ruse to get Wijetilleke to come out of his house and offer help. As he approached the vehicle offering assistance, one of the men had attacked him with an iron rod, injuring him.
As Wijetilleke’s wife arrived on the scene hearing his cries, the men had got into the vehicle and sped away.
The wife had later taken him to hospital with the assistance of a Suwa Sariya ambulance.
Wijetilleke alleged that the attack was an act of vengeance by some opponents for his crusade against bribery and corruption in the Pradeshiya Sabha.
