Six nabbed for treasure hunting

Six people were taken into custody by Mahiyanganaya Police for treasure hunting at Meegahapitiya in Mahiyanganaya on Sunday afternoon.

Three were from Mahiyanganaya and the others were from Katana, Kegalle and Kotadeniyawa. They were produced before court on the following day.

Wires, a few detonators, gelignite, hoe, shovel, crowbar and two buckets seized from them were also produced in court. The suspects, 62, 35, 45, 39, 45and 32 years, were at work in an estate called Anka-Paha Idama at Kokahitiwewa road in Meegahapitiya, a few miles from Mahiyanganaya when the police raided it.

They had been working on high hopes of finding artefacts thought to have been buried long ago.
