Lanka, Seychelles joint operation to bust drug running racket

The Police Narcotics Bureau and the Seychelles Police will conduct a joint operation to nab a group of racketeers involved in a narcotics drug running racket between Sri Lanka and the Seychelles.

A team of Police Narcotics Bureau Sleuths left for the Seychelles last week to assist in this investigation.

The drug running racket between the two countries came to light following the seizure of 231 kilogrammes of heroin in Beruwala during a joint raid conducted by the STF and the Narcotics Bureau on December 18 last year and interrogation of the suspects involved.

A notebook containing a list of telephone numbers belonging to several persons in the Seychelles was also seized from the suspect, a resident of Beruwala, who was transporting the heroin in a boat, en-route to the Seychelles.

Reports from the Seychelles state that the Sri Lankan Police team led by Narcotics Bureau Chief DIG Sajeewa Medwatta received a rousing welcome from the Seychelles Police and their arrival received wide media publicity there.

During the discussions which followed, the Sri Lanka team had handed over the list of Seychelles telephone numbers to the Seychelles Inspector General of Police after which both parties had resolved to conduct investigations into the racket and apprehend the racketeers involved.
