Heroin detection at Kollupitiya: Five remanded till March 15

The five suspects who were arrested with over 95kg of heroin in Kollupitiya, were ordered to be remanded till March 15 by Colombo Fort Unofficial Acting Magistrate Deemani Baddewela.

The five suspects including two Americans and an Afghan were arrested on January 22 at a luxury apartment complex in Kollupitiya after having 95.88 kgs of heroin worth more than Rs.1, 140 million in their possession.

President’s Counsel Anura Meddegoda appearing on behalf of the second suspect pleaded to issue an order directing the PNB to obtain CCTV footages in the appartment.

PNB officials stated that CCTV footage was not necessary for their investigations.

The PNB further stated that among the five suspects were two Sri Lankans aged 39 and 41, residents in Hikkaduwa.

The PNB also said that the Police Special Task Force (STF) and the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) officers carried out the arrests when they raided the first-floor apartment of the housing complex.

PNB sources told the court that they arrested them at a Super Market in Kollupitiya. At the time of their arrest they had 1.062 kg of heroin in their possession. PNB officials further said that the STF and PNB officers raided the luxury apartment and recovered the haul of heroin in four travelling bags hidden in two bed rooms.

“The two Americans aged 29, 43 and the Afghan aged 45 were arrested at the apartment. Officers also recovered nine mobile phones, three laptops and an I-pad,” PNB sources added.

The Magistrate fixed further inquiries for March 15.
