‘Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya’ on March 1

The 20th edition of Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya 2019 (Air Force Cycle Race) will be flagged off at Air Force Headquarters, Colombo on March 1 to mark the 68th anniversary of Sri Lanka Air Force in association with Cycling Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL).

Over hundred male and thirty female ranking/other riders registered with the CFSL are expected to compete in the race. The objective of the race is to offer an opportunity to the cycling fraternity to take part in a competitive event and to promote the sport in Sri Lanka.

The three day men’s race will cover a total distance of 404 kms and it will be finished at Polonnaruwa town. The race will start from Air Force Headquarters, Colombo at 8.30 am on March 1 and it will proceed Peliyagoda, Ja-Ela, Nittambuwa, Kegalle and finishing at Getambe with a distance of 114.03 kms. On the second day race will start from Getambe to Anuradhapura via Katugastota, Mawathagama, Kurunegala, Padeniya, Galgamuwa, Thambuttegama covering a distance of 146.06 kms. The final day of the race will finish at Polonnaruwa through Maradankadawala, Kekirawa, Dambulla, Digampathana, Minneriya and Hingurakgoda with a distance of 126.8 kms.

In addition to the men’s race the organizers have been scheduled a women’s race for the ninth year on March 3 from Dambulla to Polonnaruwa with a total distance of 65 kms.

The organisers have planned to give away handsome cash awards for Individual and group winners amounting more than Rs. 1.4 million. Individual 1st place and 2nd places will receive Rs. 300,000 and Rs. 150,000 respectively while second runner-up will be awarded Rs. 100,000. The winner of female race will receive Rs. 50,000 and prizes up to 10th place. An overall men and women sprint champions will be given Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 10,000 respectively while men’s youth champion (under 23) will receive Rs. 50,000. Men’s team champion will be awarded Rs. 150,000 and runner-up will receive Rs. 75,000. The team champion of women’s race will carry away Rs. 30,000 while runner-up will get Rs 15,000. The daily allowance of Rs. 2,000 will be paid to all riders and their managers to motivate competitors for three days of the race.

Abans Group of Companies sponsors the event for 13th consecutive year while David Peiris Motor Company joins hand as co-sponsor. People’s Insurance will be the insurance partner and MBC/MTV Network will be given their support as media partner.

The awarding ceremony will be held on March 3 at 5.00 pm at Sri Lanka Air Force Base, Hingurakgoda under the patronage of Commander of Air Force Air Marshal Kapila Jayampathy.
