Murder suspect arrested

The Crime Prevention Unit of the Matara Police raided a house of a suspect in connection with two murders at Meepavita in Kamburupitiya on Monday.

Army uniforms, 21 T-56 live bullets, a pair of Army handcuffs and several books containing illustrative tutorials on firearms were seized from the house.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had allegedly involved in the murder of a Pradeshiya Sabha member (SLPP) in Hakmana and a gem businessman in Kamburupitiya while serving at the Gemunu Watch of the Sapugaskanda Army camp. The 26-year-old suspect had also stolen gems worth Rs. 7,000 million, the Police said. Reportedly, he had fled his residence and the camp.

Interrogations into other suspects of the murder of the PS member, who are currently in remand custody, have revealed more information about the suspect and that the murders were led by drug kingpin ‘Makandure Madush’.

The father of the suspect, 53, was taken into custody. He was to be produced before court yesterday.

Investigations are continuing.
