Special Police team in Seychelles after drugs smuggling ring

A special team of sleuths from the police acting on intelligence information visited Seychelles to explore a trail of drug smuggling activities between Sri Lanka and Seychelles. The team comprised of Deputy Inspector General of Police of the Police Narcotic Bureau Sajeewa Medawatta, IP Subodha from the PNB and SI Premalal from the Special Task Force.

The police were on the trail of the large heroin haul of 231 kilograms which was discovered along the Beruwala – Balapitiya beach area.

The police arrested two suspects in the raid and assessed the market value of the haul to be Rs. 2778 million. The police also seized a boat which was used to transport the drugs.

The operation had been conducted by the STF with assistance from the Sri Lanka Navy.

The officers were in the know that drugs from Pakistan were being shipped to Sri Lanka while drugs from Sri Lanka were to be sent Seychelles.

Police were led to Seychelles on finding out that one of the suspects who was arrested was married in Seychelles and had been conducting the offshore drug trafficking operations with the assistance of his brother-in-law who was in Seychelles.
