Defender driver remanded

* Others released on bail
* Part of the proceedings held in camera
* Five failed to meet bail conditions

Police had arrested eight persons over a hit-and-run accident which had caused serious injuries to the Borella Traffic OIC around 4.35 am on Sunday near the Duplication Road - Bauddhaloka Mawatha junction in Bambalapitiya, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

The defender involved in the incident had been driven by Ratnayake Mudiyanselage Navindu Omesh Ratnayake, said to be the son of an SP attached to the President’s Security Division.

The owner of the defender WP FZ 9143 Ranchigoda Arachchige Visitha Sri Wijesekara had been riding in the front seat while UPFA MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage’s son Ranishka Aluthgamage, Vidya Wishvapathini (a female) and Peshitha Randir were travelling in the back seat of the defender at the time of the incident.

The Traffic OIC of the Borella Police, had been en route to the Kollupitiya Police, where he was assigned for special duties for the Iron Man contest and had been run down by the speeding vehicle which had also jumped a red traffic light.

Four others who were also part of this group who had been returning after attending a party organised by an air-hostess at a night club on Horton Place. They had been riding in a Prado type jeep which had been driven by Duminda Sudammika Atygalle. The others who were in the jeep were Kiran Mathew, Shiran Dinesh and Chamara Dabare.

Later that day the driver and owner of the Defender had surrendered to the police andwas taken into custody, while eight persons including Mahindananda Aluthgamage’s son Ranishka Aluthgamage and prominent businessman Dammika Atygalla’s son Duminda Sudammika Atygalle who was driving the Prado had been arrested by the Bambalapitiya Police after having recorded statements from them. They were produced before the No. 03 Magistrate’s Court in Aluthkade yesterday.

The OIC IP Idippilige Ananda Sagara Sarachchndra was critically injured in the accident and was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital. He is currently receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). According to DIG Ajith Rohana who is in charge of the Traffic division, the condition of the police officer is critical.

He said the court had ordered the police to obtain the video footage of the night club that the group had been partying at prior to the accident.

Five fail to meet bail conditions.

Meanwhile, of the seven suspects produced in court Omesh Ratnayake, who was driving the Defender was ordered to be remanded while the other seven were granted bail. However, five of them were unable to meet the bail conditions and were remanded including Mahindananda Aluthgamage’s son Ranishka Aluthgamage and Municipal Councilor Duminda Sudammika Atygalle.

Journalists were not allowed in court and the judge had ordered all others out of the open court and held the part of proceedings in camera. 


Mahindananda Aluthgamage’s son arrested (11:04)

The parliamentarian Mahindananda Aluthgamage’s son has been arrested by the Police in connection to the accident of the Traffic OIC .

The Officer in Charge of the traffic division of the Borella Police, IP Sarathchandra was admitted to the National Hospital with injuries after he met with a hit and run accident at Bambalapitiya along the Galle-Colombo road around 4.35 a.m. yesterday. He is currently receiving treatment at the ICU of the National Hospital.

Suspects have been taken into police custody.

They are to be produced before the Hulftsdorp court today.
