Siddhatta Thera to receive Akthapathra today

Ven. Udagama Siddhatta Thera was appointed Chief Sanghanayake of Colombo Kadawathsathara, with the honorary title Sasana Keerthi Sri Sirinivasa in recognition of his service in the religious, social and academic fields.

The ceremony to confer the Akthapathra will be held at Kotte Raja Maha Vihara by the Kotte Sri Kalyani Samagree Maha Sangha Sabha today at 3 pm, chaired by Mahanayake of Kotte Sri Kalayani Samagri Dharma Maha Sangha Sabha of Siyam Maha Nikaya and Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayawardene Ven. Dr. Ittapana Dhammalankara Maha Nayake Thera. The felicitation of the new Chief Sanghanayake and the offering of gilanpasa to the Maha Sangha will be held tomorrow at 5 pm in Balapokuna Purana Vihara.

Ven. Saddharmakeerthi Sri Udagama Siddhatta Thera, Chief Incumbent of Balapokuna Purana Vihara was born on January 31, 1947 in Dimbula Udugama in Nuwara Eliya to the parentage of Weerakkodi Mudiyanselage Appuhami and D. M. Dissanayake with the birth name as Ukku Bandara Weerakkodi. He had his primary education at Wijayabahukanda Maha Vidyalaya, Dimbula Udugama.

At childhood, he entered the Buddhist Order due to his parents' devotion to the Triple Gem and he was also associated with the knowledge of the educated Bhikkhus.

His ordination was held at Balapokuna Purana Vihara on June 28, 1962. His teachers were the late Most Ven. Kothmale Sirinivasa Nayaka Thera, Chief Incumbent of Balapokuna Purana Vihara at that time and Most Ven. Kothmale Gnanawasa Nayaka Thera.

Siddhatta Thera ordained under Maha Nayaka of Kotte Sri Kalyani Samagri Dharma Maha Sangha Sabha Ven. Sri Maha Vihara Wansalankara Wimala Keerthi Sri Indrajothi Ariyawansalankara Thera, Ven. Rajakeeya Panditha Anomadassi Anu Nayaka Thera and Ven. Rajakeeya Panditha Rathdelle Pagnaloka Anu Nayaka Thera. The Samanera Thera received his basic Dhamma education from Maligakanda Vidyodaya Pirivena in Colombo and entered the Pepiliyane Sunethradevi Maha Pirivena for higher education. Afterwards, the Thera received his honorary degree from the University of Kelaniya. After graduating, the Thera pursued his academic duties as a teacher from 1983 to 2004, in a number of schools.
