Sapling of Sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi gifted to Thai King

A sapling of Sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi was presented to Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn in view of the coronation of Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn with the greetings of President Maithripala Sirsiena.

The coronation of Thailand’s 10th King Maha Vajiralongkorn is to be held in May following the death of his revered father King Bhumibol Adulyadej, two years ago.

Buddhasasana Minister Gamini Jayawickrama Perera on behalf of President Maithripala Sirisena presented the Sacred Sapling to the King of Thailand with greetings from the President.

This gift from the government and the people of Sri Lanka is an important step to protect and promote Theravada Buddhism and it also helps strengthen relations between the two nations.

This is the first diplomatic gift given to the new King of Thailand. The Sapling was later planted at the Wajiradhammarama temple in Ayutthaya city by Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and Minister Gamini Jayawickrema Perera.

Thailand Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said that this gift is a symbol of friendship and brotherhood between the two nations.

Atamasthanadhipathi Ven. Pallegama Srinivasa Thera and Mahanayake Theras of Thailand, were also present .
