Ten years’ RI, Rs. 10,000 fine for raping schoolgirl

An accused who was found guilty of raping a 14-year-old schoolgirl was sentenced to 10 years’ RI and fined Rs. 10,000 by Kurunegala High Court Judge Menaka Wijesundara on Monday. The accused, Jayasinghe Mudiyansalage Sumith Chanaka Jayasinghe of Puttalam, Arachchikattuwa was indicted by the Attorney General for sexually abusing the girl on July 1, 2014.

The accused is a father of two children, police said.

Senior State Counsel Charaka Dharmasiri told court that the Sri Lanka Penal Code of 1995, Section 363 criminalizes rape and Section 364 specifies the terms of imprisonment and an order of compensation against a convicted rapist.

The judge, thereafter, ordered the accused to pay Rs. 100,000 to the girl as compensation. In default of the fine and compensation, he was sentenced to another one year imprisonment.

State Counsel Charaka Dharmasiri prosecuted with the assistance of Chilaw and Puttalam police.
