Envoy eyes Yazd - Sri Lanka joint tourism promotion

The central Iranian city of Yazd and Sri Lanka can promote tourism for each other, according to Sri Lankan Ambassador to Iran M. S. Anees.

“Yazd is the best tourist destination in Iran and many foreign nationals visit this city; the same goes with Sri Lanka,” said Ambassador Anees on Sunday.

“I think we can develop the tourism industry in these regions together,” he added, visiting the historical Iranian city.

Anees highlighted the similarities between Yazd and Colombo, adding that many people from various religions and beliefs live in both cities.

The Ambassador stressed that he will take steps to connect Yazd with one or two cities in Sri Lanka.

Anees said he wanted to develop commercial ties between Sri Lanka and Yazd, adding, “Iranian firms can cooperate in producing construction materials, constructing infrastructure and towers in Sri Lanka.”

Clothes are the major export from Sri Lanka. It needs lots of material. “This is where Yazd can cooperate with us,” he said.

He said a direct flight between Colombo and Tehran could be launched soon to “promote trade and tourism”. - IRNA
