Policeman injured by service weapon

A Police officer had been shot in the hand while trying to apprehend a suspect and escort him to the Kadawatha Police Station yesterday.

Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said the incident had occurred around 5.10 last evening near the Kadawatha junction Bo Tree when the Police had stopped  a three wheeler and recovered 10 grams of heroin in it during a search operation based on a tip-off.

When the Police had arrested the suspect and was attempting to take him and the three wheeler back to the Kadawatha Police Station, the suspect had grappled with the Police officer and his service weapon had accidently fired, injuring the Police officer in the hand. He was admitted to the Ragama hospital for treatment.

The 22-year-old suspect is a resident of Ihala Biyanwila, Kadawatha and Police had also taken his mother, wife and child who were also in the three wheeler at the time, into custody for questioning. Kadawatha Police investigating
