Paddy purchasing commences in Ampara

Maha season paddy purchasing in Ampara is in progress.

The Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) has opened paddy buying centres in the district.

Ampara District Secretary D. M. L. Bandaranayake inaugurated the purchase of paddy at the Akkaraipattu paddy purchasing centre, recently.

The District Secretary said arrangements are made by the government to purchase the paddy harvest of the Maha season through the paddy buying centres in Ampara.

The government has allocated Rs. 1,200 million for the purpose to Ampara of which Rs. 200 million was sent as the first stage, upon the approval of Minister Daya Gamage.

Paddy is to be purchased under a guaranteed price of Rs. 41 per kilo of Samba and Rs.38 per kg of Nadu. A maximum of 2,000 kg of paddy can be purchased from a farmer.

The PMB’s Ampara Regional Manager Nimal Ekanayake, Akkaraipattu Divisional Secretary I. L. Razan, farmer organisation representatives and farmers participated in the paddy purchasing ceremony.

Meanwhile, the price of rice in the district has been reduced due to the Maha harvest.
