Panadura UC suspends licences of mushroom lodges

The Panadura Urban Council on Thursday decided to suspend the licences of mushroom lodges and tourist hotels in Panadura town which do not meet Sri Lanka Tourism’s standards. The decision was taken by Chairman Nandana Goonetileke.

Councillors Anura Wijepala, Kumudu Fernando and Vice Chairman P.H. Wilman Fernando speaking at the council meeting, said there were over 20 mushroom lodges in addition to hotels in the Panadura town where schoolgirls and young boys were led to have affairs with wealthy youth.

The illicit liquor problem also exists in these lodges.

They said parents had complained that sexual offences were being committed on schoolgirls and girls working in garment factories, who are afraid to complain to the police.

The previous administration of the Panadura Urban Council had granted licences to the mushroom lodges without conducting investigation into their facilities and standards, they said.

Wilman Fernando said three or four lodges were operating behind temples.
