Ambassador Thassim calls Saudi HRC President

Sri Lanka's Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Azmi Thassim called on Dr. Bandar bin Mohammed Al-Alban, President of the Saudi Human Rights Commission (SHRC), in Riyadh last week.

Their discussion focused on the situation of foreign workers in Saudi Arabia and the role of the Saudi Human Rights Commission in this regard.

Dr. Al-Alban underlined that Saudi Arabia is a party to a number of human rights-related conventions and that the country is bound by law to adhere to these international human rights norms. He emphasised that one of the key roles of the Saudi Human Rights Commission is to look into the welfare of foreign workers in Saudi Arabia.

The Ambassador updated Dr. Al-Alban on the steps that the Government of Sri Lanka has taken in strengthening the human rights situation in the country. He also brought to the attention of Dr. Alban the role that Embassy playing in resolving issues related to the Sri Lankan workers in Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Al- Alban expressed his willingness to work closely with the Embassy and his counterparts in the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka.​

Dr. Nasser Bin Rajeh Al – Shahrani, Vice President SHRC and Badr Bajaber - Chairman Anti Human Trafficking Committee at SHRC assisted Dr. Al Alban at the discussion. The Ambassador was assisted by Minister Counsellor Madhuka Wickramarachchi and desk officer for bilateral affairs A.L.M Jabeer.
