Dance recital celebrating poet Bharathiyar

A dance recital celebrating the poet Bharathiyar will be held at the Bishops College Auditorium on Friday, February 8 at 7pm.

Srimathi Mohana Harendran, daughter of the late Sri Suntharalingam Sathyalingam and the late Srimathi Neila Sathyalingam, established the Sathyalayam School of Music and Dance in 2011.

Mohana graduated from Kalakshetra with a First Class Post Graduate Diploma in Bhartanatyam. She had the privilege of receiving guidance directly from Srimathi Rukmini Devi Arundale in Bhartanatyam and SangithaKalanidhiSrimathi D K Pattammal in Carnatic Music. At present Mohana teaches dance and music to children aged 4 to 18 years old.

At an early age the significance of MahakaviSubramaniaBharati in the struggle for Indian independence was brought to her attention by her grandfather Professor C Suntharalingam.

She is therefore honoured to present this dance drama, Mazhalaiyum Bharathiyum, based on the poetry of Bharathiyar.

MAZHALAIYUM BHARATHIYUM - A visually appealing Bhartanatyam dance drama which makes use of music, dance and drama to convey the meaning of the poetry of Bharathiyar.

This production presented by children aged 6 to 16 years will, through the beautifully choreographed items and lively music, convey the poetic verse of Bharathiyar to an audience of all ages.

GUEST ARTISTE – ARCHITECT C ANJALENDRAN - Anjalendran was the first male to have his arangetram in Sri Lanka in 1966, at the age of 15 years, under the tutelage of SivakumariRasiah for Bharathanatyam and SukenduDutt for Kathak, Kathakali and Manipuri. He is a cousin of Mohana. He also practises architecture Anjalendran will present KAALAI THOOKI by Marimuthu Pillai, sung by his uncle Sangeetha Siromani S Sathyalingam, dedicated to his ancestors who have departed. And reverting to the theme of the programme, CHUTRRUM VILLI by Bharathiyar sung by Hariharan.
