Rs. 185 mn to improve fishermen’s livelihoods

The Fisheries Ministry, under its Diyawara Piyasa livelihood empowerment programme, invested Rs. 185 million to upgrade the facilities of the fishing community. Funds have been used for the construction of new houses, renovation, and improvement of sanitation.

A total of 72 fisher families are granted Rs. 21.45 million as housing construction aid on the basis of Rs. 300,000 per family. For the renovation of dilapidated houses, Rs. 137.26 million has been provided to 1,616 families.

In addition to improving sanitation, 972 fisher families are granted Rs. 26.62 million for the implementation of 26 projects involving infrastructure facilities development in fishing villages, women's and children's welfare and livelihood strengthening ventures under the Wewak Samaga Gamak programme by the Fisheries Ministry.

A spokesperson of the ministry said it is being targeted to increase freshwater and aquatic fish production to 352,000 mt in 2020 by providing better living facilities to freshwater fishermen.
