Appeal filed by former DIG Vass Gunawardena fixed for March 12

The appeal petition filed by former DIG Vaas Gunawardena, his son Ravindu Vaas Gunawardena and four police officers challenging Colombo High Court's judgment to convict them for committing the murder of millionaire businessman Mohamed Shyam was today fixed for March 12 by Supreme Court.

When the matter came up before Supreme Court five-judge-bench headed by Justice Sisira de Abrew, the court was informed that Colombo High Court has already forwarded the documents pertaining to High Court trial-at-bar proceedings. The appeal will be taken up again on March 12 in order to ascertain whether brief has been carried properly.

Supreme Court five-judge-bench comprised Justices Sisira de Abrew, Justice Priyantha Jayawardena, Justice Prasanna Jayawardena, Justice Vijith Malalgoda and Justice Preethi Padman Surasena.
Supreme Court also directed the Registrar of Mahara Magistrate's Court to forward the documents pertaining to a magisterial inquiry against Vass Gunawardena.
