Wellawaya tourist’s story ‘grossly exaggerated’

Police acted in accordance with law –Tourist Police OIC

Tourist Police Division OIC CI Prabath Vidanagama whilst regretting an unfortunate which had befallen a Swiss tourist who had been vacationing in Wellawaya said the police had acted promptly in accordance with the law.

This, he says, led to the arrest of the suspect the day following the complaint.

Swiss couple Priscilla and Flavien arrived in Sri Lanka on January 6 and had stayed in a luxury resort in Wellawaya. Priscilla complained of being sexually harassed by the masseuse of the hotel spa, and also complained that neither the hotel nor the police had been helpful.

“This is not true. The tourist had faced this incident on January 21, she reported it to the police on January 22, and the suspect was arrested on January 23. He was also produced before the magistrate on January 26,” said CI Vidanagama.

“The police have acted in accordance with the law and apprehended the suspect the following day. We request all tourists to ensure that such complaints are lodged the same day so that swifter action can be taken,” he said. He added that the Tourist Police had advised Priscilla to lodge a complaint at the nearest police station. He said that it was only reasonable to request that she provide a translated version of her statement in English, since she made the initial statement in French.
