A sting operation conducted for many months by Sri Lanka Police has finally led to the arrest of notorious underworld leader and drug kingpin Makandure Madush along with many of his accomplices at his son’s birthday bash at a luxury hotel in Dubai yesterday.

Acting on intelligence information gathered by Sri Lanka Police, the Dubai Anti-Narcotics Police were alerted to the whereabouts of several criminals wanted in connection with grave crimes and drug trafficking offenses, during the wee hours of yesterday (5).

Informed sources said the Sri Lanka Police had been in pursuit of these suspects and had been monitoring their movements for many months.

The Dubai Police had made the arrest during a birthday party celebration at a six-star class hotel in the capital. Dubai anti-narcotic police arrested 25 individuals for the possession and use of cocaine, heroin and other narcotics at the birthday bash. The party had been held for Makandure Madush’s son. Madush’s mistress was also among the arrested.

Out of the 25 individuals who were arrested, three of them have been identified. This includes Kanjipani Imran whose name has been linked to several large scale drug operations from Pakistan to Sri Lanka. Keselwatte Dinuka has also been identified. He was believed to be hiding in Dubai and is said to control underworld gang and drug trafficking operations locally. His main accomplice 33-year-old Vidanage Asanka was arrested by the Special Task Force in June last year for the possession of 10 grams of heroin. The third individual has been identified as Angoda Chutti.

Reliable sources told the paper, that a prominent singer and his son were also netted in the raid. The actor of a teledrama telecast these days is also among those arrested. Sources say that Dubai Police are in touch with the Foreign Affairs Ministry for matters relating to identification.

However it is not clear at this point if Dubai police will prosecute these individuals or will extradite them to Sri Lanka.

Sources say that although Dubai laws deal harshly with drug trafficking and consumption, it is unclear how this arrest would be recorded by the police which would determine the course of action.

According to the Dubai law, consumption is a punishable offense and suspects can be imprisoned or extradited. “As it is unclear how much drugs was seized in the bust, it is debatable as to how the police would record the arrest. If the individuals were to hire lawyers in Dubai itself, they maybe tried there. This is yet to be seen.”
