Hold PC elections without delay - SLFP Gen. Sec.

Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) General Secretary MP Dayasiri Jayasekara yesterday requested the government to hold Provincial Council elections without delay to ensure the country’s democracy.

Addressing the media at the SLFP Headquarters yesterday, Jayasekara said the SLFP plans to take all possible measures to force the government to hold Provincial Council elections.

He said President Maithripala Sirisena has already submitted a Cabinet Paper seeking approval to hold elections to the nine Provincial Councils on a single day before May 31 this year.

MP Jayasekara further called on the Government to introduce a new Bill to Parliament to hold elections under the previous system and all MPs will support to pass the Bill. He asked the government not to delay the holding of the elections using different excuses and there is no need to worry about securing a two-thirds majority to pass this Bill.

Dehiwala – Mount Lavinia Municipal Council Deputy Mayor Keerthi Udawatte urged all SLFPers who left the party to join hands to strengthen the SLFP claiming that the country needs a left wing democratic political leadership. He further said that President Sirisena has never tried to use his party leadership to take personal revenges and he always try to strengthen the party.

Former SLFP Provincial Council member Rehensiri Waragoda and Bulathsinhala Electorate SLFP Organizer Thusitha Kularatne also addressed the occasion.
