‘SL-China FTA to be signed this year’

The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Sri Lanka and China is expected to be signed this year, China Daily reported yesterday, quoting the Sri Lankan Embassy in China.

According to the embassy, the sixth round of negotiations to formulate the FTA had been concluded in March 2017.

Sri Lankan Ambassador to China Karunasena Kodituwakku said that Sri Lanka is interested in forging more ties with China in the fields of economy and trade.

He said that Sri Lanka considers the Belt and Road Initiative a great opportunity for its development, highlighting the importance of joint BRI projects such as the Colombo Port City and the Hambantota Port.

He said he hopes to bring more investment to Sri Lanka, to make the Colombo Port City a financial centre in South Asia. A comprehensive free trade agreement covering goods, services, investment, as well as economic and technical cooperation, is forthcoming to outline Sino-Sri Lankan trade.
