Five Bangladeshi's arrested over heroin detection in SL

The Bangladeshi Rapid Action Battalion had arrested five people in Bangladesh over their suspected involvement in the biggest drug haul in Sri Lanka's history.

The suspects were detained in separate raids on Monday, Bangladeshi news reported.  

However the identities of the suspects – three women and two men – who are accused of being involved in “an international drug racket” have not been revealed so far.

The Rapid Action Battalion was scheduled to hold a press briefing today to discuss details of its operation.

On Dec 31, Sri Lankan Police seized 272 kilograms of heroin and five kilograms of cocaine during a special operation at a housing complex in Templers Road at Colombo’s Mount Lavinia. The haul is worth over Rs. 2.4 billion.  

Speaking to the Daily News Senior DIG M.R. Latiff, in charge of  Organized crimes, narcotics and the Commandant of the STF said the Sri Lankan Police had been in constant touch with the Bangladesh Police regarding the investigations into this drug ring.

It was reported that the Sri Lankan government sought Bangladesh’s assistance in the investigation. Bangladesh High Commissioner M Riaz Hamidullah had assured Sri Lanka of his full cooperation.
