Minister urges to expedite process

Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam issued instructions to the Education Publications Department to distribute adequate stocks of free textbooks and Teachers’ Guides of primary grades to all schools as soon as possible.

A number of school heads and Zonal Directors of Education have claimed that they have not been issued with books yet and are inconvenienced as the school term has already commenced.

They have made this request to the Education Ministry, W. M. Balasooriya, Kurunegala District senior Director of Education said.

He said Rs. 2,600 million was spent for printing and transporting free textbooks for students this year. Text books and Teacher Guides would be sent to schools within the next few weeks, he said. However, several Teachers’ Unions too have highlighted this shortage of books. Steps to issue the books would be expedited by the ministry, Director Balasooriya said.
