Sri Lanka will receive S’pore drug eradication knowhow

The scientific and technological knowhow used by Singapore in its drug eradication effort will be introduced to the drug eradication drive undertaken in Sri Lanka.

This assurance was made by Singaporean authorities when President Maithripala Sirisena who is paying a two day official visit to Singapore met a team of Singaporean officials engaged in the drug eradication effort led by Social and Family Development Minister and National Development Deputy Minister Desmond Lee at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Singapore on January 24 morning, the President’s Media Unit said.

The statement said the Singaporean team gave this assurance in response to a request made by President Sirisena for their assistance.

Accordingly, a team of Singaporean officials representing the Government is due to arrive in Sri Lanka to find out ways and means of assisting the country’s drug eradication effort.

At this meeting, Singaporean officials explained in detail the measures adopted during anti-narcotics raids and the progress achieved in a joint exercise launched by several Ministries at national level in this direction.

President Sirisena also explained the measures adopted by Sri Lanka so far in its effort to eliminate narcotic drugs.

The President said he hoped to appreciate the dedicated service rendered by police personnel in the anti- narcotics drive by making Presidential awards to them next week. The Singaporean team at the discussions also included senior Director, International Co-operation and Relations Division Home Affairs Ministry Ling Young Eru, Acting Director Anti Narcotics Bureau Sebastian Tan and its Communications Director Sng Chern Hong.

The President who arrived at Isthana Palace of Singapore this morning was warmly welcomed by the President of Singapore, the President’s Media Division said. The two leaders discussed on how to carry on the bilateral relations forward with strength and the President of Singapore expressed appreciation over the steps taken by Sri Lanka in terms of political, societal and economic development.
