Dictionaries for all seasons

‘Tharumal Ahurak’ (Shining Stars) –ILUKA was invited to attend an end of the year school prize giving event which attracted more than 1000 people from Wanathavilluwa (WV) area, in the District Secretariat Division of Puttalam.

The evening was hosted by the Bandaranaikapura Junior School and representing ILUKA Lanka Resources was Victor Araujo (Country Manager) and Matthewzam123!@# Harding (HSEC Manager) along with other invited guests such as local politicians, the Divisional Secretary, religious leaders, education department officials, community leaders, parents and students. To celebrate this end of the year prize giving event, ILUKA donated dictionaries (English – Sinhala and English – Tamil) to 329 grade five graduating students from 12 schools in the WV Division. Amongst these children, 19 received scholarships because of their exceptional exam results.

The government-funded scholarships will allow the students to enroll in prestigious Colombo based senior schools. Poor school attendance, the lack of school teachers to provide quality education, poverty and other social challenges faced by the students in the community is a major contributor to low pass rates in the area. Focusing on education development will positively influence the overall development of Wanathavilluwa (WV) DS Division.

Therefore, ILUKA, as part of its Community Social Responsibility investment program in 2018, has been sponsoring the Teacher Training Initiative program, which Iluka established in partnership with the non-for profit organization ‘Without Boarders’.

This program entailed Iluka to sponsor the placement of 38 volunteer teachers in 13 regional schools.

The Principal of Bandaranaikapura Junior School stated, “Dictionaries are the best gifts for a child during this period.”

The principal of Mailankulama School noted that she highly values ILUKA’s efforts and hoped that similar support will continue in the future.
