Fall Armyworm menace in Nuwara Eliya: Maize farmers destroy crops to curb spread

Farmers in Nuwara Eliya commenced destroying their maize crops due to the Fall Armyworm being found in the maize cultivation in Ruwanpura in Hatton.

Farmers in Ruwanpura are engaged in the cultivation of a variety of crops including maize. When the authorities inspected the cultivation in Ruwanpura, the worm's presence in Nuwara Eliya was confirmed.

However, farmers, fearing that this would spread to other crops, commenced destroying their maize cultivations. The Fall Armyworm is reported in almost all parts of the country.

Farmers said the economy of the country would be gravely affected if it spreads to tea estates.
