Government dawned golden era of education: Minister

The past four years could be described as a golden era in higher education in this country, as the government had spent Rs.60 billion for physical infrastructure development in this sector, City Planning, Water Supply and Higher Education Minister Rauff Hakeem said.

He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the Sabaragamuwa University's Medical Faculty, held under the auspices of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at Kuruwita in Ratnapura, recently.

Minister Hakeem said that it was a decisive milestone in the Sabaragamuwa University’s history, that it had taken a giant leap forward with the setting up of the new Medical Faculty.

The number of intakes to the university had also increased by 6,618, he said, adding that when he took over the Higher Education Ministry, there was only 24,540-student intake.

The number of students at medical faculties in the country was increased from 1,220 to 1,480. The decisive changes being made in Higher Education bears witness to the phenomenal development that the sector experiences today, making this an epochal era for the sector, he added.

The minister said that the changes the government enabled during the past four years had created a steady flow of resources and recruitment to universities, adding that he would shortly submit Cabinet papers to appoint a commission to identify the lacuna in the prevailing higher education system and address them immediately.

Sabaragamuwa University Chancellor Ven. Prof. Kamburugamuwe Vajira Thera, Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, Justice Minister Thalatha Atukorala, State Health Minister Faizal Cassim, State Minister Karunarathna Paranavithana, Members of Parliament representing Ratnapura, Higher Education Ministry Secretary M.M.P.K. Mayadunne, UGC Chairman Prof. Mohan De Silva, and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sunil Shantha were also present.

The Ratnapura General Hospital was upgraded as a Teaching Hospital to be linked to the newly-established Medical Faculty.
