A tragedy was reported at an unprotected railway crossing near the Tudella Railway Station in Ja-Ela when a man, woman and her eight-year-old daughter were killed in a train accident on Saturday afternoon. The motorcycle they were riding was involved in an accident with a Colombo-bound train from Negombo around 2.00 pm.

They deceased are Warnakulasooriya Sathyajith Christos Prasanna (50), his sister-in-law Sumali Silashini (36), and Samuddhiya Range Bandara (8) of Dadugama, Ja-Ela.

According to the relatives, the deceased were on the way to drop the girl at a tuition class when the accident happened.

Hospital sources said the mother and daughter had died on the spot and the man died on admission to the Ragama Hospital. It is reported that there is no gatekeeper or signal system at this railway crossing, after the previous gatekeeper left the job recently. The post-mortem was held yesterday morning. Speaking to media, the Inquirer said the Pradeshiya Sabha of the relevant area should be held responsible for unprotected railway crossings.

Maintaining such railway crossings would assure public safety.
