A teacher with a superhuman ego

M Entertainment movies are usually made by Sirasa to entertain families. The whole family could sit together and watch these films that are endorsed by the filmgoers as products that give money’s worth.

Dharmayuddaya and Goal are good examples.

Sirasa’s newest film Thaala made to an interesting theme revolves around a male teacher who comes to a school in a remote village to become a hero among the students.

Hatangala primary school is located between the dense forest and a scenic lake in a very rural area in this country. Children from two villages attend this school. Some of them have made a habit of swimming across the lake to avoid the wild elephants on the way.

The headmaster who is close to retirement (Jayalath Manorathne), along with a senior teacher (Kaushalya Fernando) tries in vain to keep the school open amid the interference of a Politician (Chamila Pieris) and another teacher (Priyantha Sirikumara).

This beetle chewing teacher who presents himself as a humble and down-to-earth person is habitually more focused on his own businesses than mentoring students. Newest appointment to the staff, Asela Danthure Bandara (Hemal Ranasinghe) comes to Hatangala amidst these issues.

Asela’s parents are middle-class government employees. Asela is an English graduate from the University of Colombo.

Not a strong believer in the prevailing primary education system, Asela take up the challenge to exemplify the power of informal education by guiding his students in an innovative manner to learn things through practical application.

With Asela as their teacher, students become more engaged and involved and the school sees an increase in the attendance of students much to the dismay of the politician and her followers who begin to harass Asela and provoke the students’ parents against him.

When Asela is finally transferred from the school, his unseen mentor influences the appointment of another female teacher (Kalani Dodantenna) who follows the same path to make Asela’s noble objective materialize.

Thaala has in abundance the scenic beauty of rural Sri Lanka. The picturesque quality of the film is at a higher level. The music scores and songs are refreshing.

Thaala is the debut film direction by experienced film personality, Palitha Perera.

Nilan Weerasinghe has produced Thaala.
