Eight protestors remanded

Eight persons who staged a demonstration obstructing traffic, causing damages to the highway by burning discarded tyres on it and preventing duties of police officers, were remanded until January 23 by Galle Chief Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela when they were produced before court by Akmeemana police.

The suspects had protested against the police for not arresting a driver in a road accident that caused a person’s death.

Talpe Medaduwage Dinesh Kumara, Palliyaguruge Harsha Mdushanka, Karagoda VIdanagamage Sarath, Dankoluwa Kaluarachchige Janaka Gayan, Udabettava Medage Kapila Udayapriya, Ellawela Kankanamge NIshantha Pushpakumara, Koggalalana Devage Gayan Buddhika Jayan Buddhika, and Dange Chandana Pushpakumara were remanded in this regard.

Police told court that .the suspect held the protest at the Thalgamapola Junction on Udugama-Galle highway on January 10 around 7.20 pm obstructing the vehicular traffic for well over three hours.

The court was told that the protestors did not allow even ambulances to pass the junction. Emergency vehicle drivers had to take alternative ways to reach their destinations.

On January 5, a person identified as Ellawela Kankanamge Thediyas, was injured in an accident.

He died while he was under treatment at the Karapitiya Hospital later.

The protestors demanded police to arrest the driver who caused the accident.

A bottle of petrol and five discarded tyres were seized by police.

The police submitted to court a report from the Judicial Medical Officer of the Karapitiya Hospital that confirmed that the suspects were drunk during the protest.

The suspects were charged under the National Highway Act, Public Property Act, and Cemeteries and Burial Grounds Ordinance
