Public called to donate blood

The National Blood Bank officials request the public to donate more blood to ensure smooth supply of blood for emergency health services.

The officials said that a shortage of blood platelets is evident now and requested the public to donate more blood to fill the gap. Usually around 75 blood donation camps were held island-wide every month but this month, the number has decreased to 55, they said.

Blood can be donated at the centre at the Narahenpita Junction, Colombo 5 or to the blood bank of the nearest state hospital.

One healthy donor can donate blood once in every four month and one donor’s blood can save three lives, they said. Donating blood has many benefits. A donor can save many lives and it improves the donor’s overall cardiovascular health.

The blood donating accelerates producing new blood cells, reduces cancer risks and burns calories.
