The Mercantile Services Basketball Association (Mercantile SBA) reached both the men and women’s finals of the 52nd National Basketball championships which was held at the Sri Lanka Air Force Indoor Stadium, Bambalapitiya. Mercantile BMA will meet Sri Lanka Army in the women’s final, while Colombo District BA will compete with Mercantile SBA at the men’s final and both finals will be played today (12) at the same venue Air Force Indoor Stadium.
The Women’s final is scheduled to be held at 5.30 pm today while the men’s final will be played at 7pm today. In the semi finals Sri Lanka Army was beaten by Mercantile SBA 70-58 in the men’s event and that is the first time Army reached the semi finals after three decades. After the first half Mercantile cagers led 33-21 and they also dominated the second half to reach the final.
However the most exciting semi final was the game between Sri Lanka Army women and Air Force. Both teams gave of their best in a bid to reach the final. At half time Army women team lead 23-22 and finally during the second half once again after a very close fight Army won by a five point margin 52-47
Mercantile SBA defeated Sri Lanka Schools 61-49 at the other women’s semi final while Colombo BA beat Hambantota BA easily by 60-39 to enter the men’s final.
The consolation finals will be played from 2.30 pm today in which Sri Lanka schools will meet the Air Force women while Hambantota BA will meet Sri Lanka Army in the men’s tourney. This tournament is being conducted by the Sri Lanka Basketball Federation and this year’s tournament was more competitive than the previous years said Vice President of the Basketball Federation Chandana Liyanage.
