Nabbed while transporting beef illegally

Public Health Officers in Panadura, Kehelwatte seized a vehicle transporting 200 kilogrammes of beef to an illegally-run beef stall in Thotawatte.

Four suspects were produced before Panadura Additional Magistrate Chandana Kalansuriya yesterday. The suspects were granted bail earlier on Saturday by the Panadura Acting Magistrate. The Additional Magistrate yesterday ordered the Public Health Inspectors to destroy the stock of beef valued at Rs. 200,000 after taking samples.

The Public Health Inspector, appearing before court, informed the Additional Magistrate that the accused possessed fraudulent documents as a permit to transport beef. It is alleged that they were transporting beef from an illegal slaughter house in Bandaragama.

The case was postponed for January 24.
