Ranil dismisses wimal’s claim on sc

MP Wimal Weerawansa charged that the Supreme Court has come under the grip of ‘a certain religious sect belonging to America’. He charged that the Constitutional Council (CC) nominates only those belonging to that religious faith to the Supreme Court.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe rebuked NFF Leader Wimal Weerawansa for degrading Parliament with his demeaning conduct and utterances. The Prime Minister confronted Weerawansa when the latter heaped criticism on the Supreme Court Judges and the Constitutional Council (CC).

Weerawansa also requested a two-day debate on the conduct of the CC.

He said that the Speaker, who is also the head of CC, had reportedly sent a letter to the President declining to appoint judges as per seniority.

The PM, intervening at this point, asked not to make baseless accusations against the SC. “If you have substantial evidence then bring an impeachment motion. Do not sling mud without facts. The dignity of Parliament is at all-time low because of your unparliamentary conduct. Help us rectify it,” the PM added.

The PM also stressed that SC judges should not be criticised if the requested debate takes place. “None of us at the CC made our selections based on religious faiths. We have not even heard of those so called religious sects which belong to America. You all worshiped the SC before the judgement, and when its ruling was unfavourable to your side you now shamelessly criticise the SC,” the PM remarked.
