CTU cries foul over 3,850 sport instructors

The Ceylon Teacher’s Union (CTU) expressed dissatisfaction over the decision to recruit 3,850 Sport Instructors.

The Education Ministry will recruit 3,850 sport instructors aiming to streamline sports sector in the school system. The Ministry received the cabinet approval in this regard recently.

However the CTU pointed out that there is such a post in the teachers’ cadre and therefore the step to recruit sport instructors will affect the Teacher Service Minute.

“This is a violation of Teacher Service Minute,” CTU Chief Secretary Joseph Starlin said.

He said recruitment should be carried out under Number 1885/38 of the Teacher Service Minute of October 2, 2014. Under this Teacher Service Minute, no one can be absorbed to the Teacher’s Service as Sports Instructors since there is no such post in the cadre.

“Only persons who have mastered the sports and physical training subject should be recruited as sport teachers into the school system,” he said.

He further added that there are several ‘Colleges of Education’ established to train sports teachers required for the school system such as Bandarawela, Ruwanpura and Nilwala Colleges of Education.
