Five new members appointed to Selection Committee

Parliament appointed five new members to the Selection Committee yesterday increasing the total number of members from 13 to 18.

The Selection Committee chaired by Speaker Karu Jayasuriya decides on the members of other Parliamentary Committees including the COPE and COPA. The Parliamentary Committees stood dissolved following the prorogation of Parliament by President Maithripala Sirisena on October 27. Parliament appointed UNP members and Ministers John Amaratunga, Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, Sajith Premadasa and Thalatha Athukorala and UPFA MP Douglas Devananda to the Selection Committee yesterday.

On November 23, Parliament appointed UNF members Lakshman Kiriella, Rauff Hakeem, , Mano Ganeshan and Patali Champika Ranawaka, UPFA members Dinesh Gunawardena, S.B. Dissanayake, Nimal Siripala de Silva, Mahinda Samarasinghe and Wimal Weerawansa, JVP MP Vijitha Herath and TNA MP Mavai Senadhiraja to the committee following an electronic vote. The e-vote was taken as the UPFA MPs, who then sat on the Government benches, demanded the majority of the Selection Committee. The UPFA MPs however left the Chamber without participating in the e-vote.
