FR challenging removal of Ranil re-fixed for support

The Fundamental Rights petition filed by Ven. Dambara Amila Thera seeking an interim order staying the decision of President Maithripala Sirisena to remove Ranil Wickremesinghe from the office of the Prime Minister through an extraordinary gazette notification dated October 26 was yesterday re-fixed for support by the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court two-judge-Bench comprising Justice Prasanna Jayawardena and Justice L.T.B. Dehideniya fixed the matter for support on February 7.

The petitioner, a Nayaka Thera attached to the Nalanda University College in Horana cited 53 persons including former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Attorney General and the Cabinet of Ministers as respondents.

The petitioner further sought an interim order staying the decision of President to appoint Mahinda Rajapaksa to the office of Prime Minister on October 26.

This petition had been filed through Attorney-at-Law Raj Mohan Balendra. Meanwhile, another Fundamental Rights petition filed by Oshala Herath, the former Deputy Director of the Presidential Media Unit over the same issue was also re-fixed for support on February 7. President’s Counsel M.A. Sumanthiran appeared for the petitioner.
