Flood relief train reaches Killinochchi

The train Manushatwaye Dumriya, which left the Matara railway station on December 31 afternoon carrying relief items from the South for people in the North affected by inclement weather, reached Killinochchi.

This was a reciprocal gesture towards such assistance sent by the people in the North to their brother citizens in the South affected by floods in an earlier occasion under a programme organised by the Puravesi Athwela programme of the Presidential Secretariat, stated a press release from the President’s Media Unit.

The programme this time was organised by the Surakimu Dumriya movement with the blessings of President Maithripala Sirisena, the statement said.

Volunteers attached to the Puravesi Athwela programme and the President’s Media Unit joined hands with it to carry out the relief mission to the North.

The train which left Matara around 2.30 pm on December 31 arrived in Colombo Fort around 6.30 am on January 1 after gathering the goods collected at the Galle station too.

After leaving Colombo Fort on January 1 morning, the train collected more relief items at Ragama, Gampaha, Veyangoda, Mirigama, Polgahawela, Kurunegala, Ganewatta, Mahawa, Galgamuwa and Anuradhapura stations.

After reaching Killinochchi, the items were handed over to the Killinochchi District Secretary for distribution among affected people in the area.

The items included dry food rations, drinking water, school equipment, clothing, sanitary items, drugs etc.
