Eighteen words to be remembered

Speaking at a certain gathering way back in the 1980s Chief Justice Nevil Samarakoon made some comment on the Judiciary.

It had been reported by the Sun newspaper, which is no more now. In the report, there were 18 words which I always remember when some judicial legal and social controversies come to the forefront.

When the unanimous judgement of seven-member bench on the constitutionality of the appointment of Prime Minister and the dissolution of Parliament was heard, I remembered again those 18 words.

The 18 words of Chief Justice Nevil Samarakoon are as follows: “We are not infallible. But we are final. We are considered to be infallible because we are final.”

How nice eighteen words they remain to be.
