Are there moves afoot to oust the manager of the Sri Lanka cricket team Charith Senanayake?
The Daily News reliably learns that the Sri Lanka team management that is controlled by the head coach Chandika Hathurusingha is quite uncomfortable with the presence of Senanayake amongst their midst and are making moves to have him replaced ahead of the tour to New Zealand which is Sri Lanka’s next series after the present one against England.
Senanayake, a former Sri Lanka Test opener who has served as manager under reputed coaches like Trevor Bayliss and Paul Farbrace (the present England coach and assistant coach) and Graham Ford was appointed to his current position by Sri Lanka Cricket in July for the home series against South Africa and continued to hold it for the Asia Cup in UAE and for the current England series.
It is learnt that Senanayake has written to SLC CEO Ashley de Silva about the latest developments and is due to meet him on Monday.
In the meanwhile it is reliably understood that there is also a move to replace the current fielding coach Manoj Abeywickrama.
Since Hathurusingha’s appointment to the Sri Lanka team as head coach last December he has been unable to lift the national’s team fortunes especially in the one-day format like he did for Bangladesh when he was their head coach. Sri Lanka has lost a ODI series 2-3 to South Africa and suffered humiliating defeats at the hands of Bangladesh and Afghanistan in the Asia Cup held in September before being thrashed 3-1 by England.
Sri Lanka are facing a huge task of trying to save the ongoing first cricket Test against England at Galle after being set a mammoth 462 runs to win.
