UNP Parliamentarians Palitha Thewarapperuma and Heshan Withanage arrested for allegedly assaulting Rtd Major Ajith Prasanna were yesterday released on bail after being produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate.
Colombo Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake ordered two Parliamentarians to be released on a surety bail of Rs. 100,000 each.
The two suspects were arrested by Kollupitiya police for allegedly assaulting Rtd Major Ajith Prasanna in front of Temple Trees on November 1. The Kollupitiya Police had recorded statements from two MPs and produced them before the Colombo Fort Magistrate.
Police told court that the complainant Ajith Prasanna has left the hospital after receiving treatment for injuries.
In his complaint to the Kollupitiya Police, the complainant said a group of people led by the two suspects attacked him and verbally abused him when he was walking with several others in front of Temple Trees. Further magisterial inquiry was fixed for February 14.
President’s Counsel Nissanka Nanayakkara appeared for the suspects.
